American Tree Sparrow / Spizelloides arborea

: late Oct/early Nov to mid Apr, with from mid Oct and to early May, in weedy fields, marsh edges, open woodlands with low cover, hedgerows and gardens, and of course bird feeders.

Miscellany: American Tree Sparrow used to be considered related to Chipping Sparrow but recent genetic appraisals show it to be closer to Fox Sparrow. This handsome bird appears to have declined noticeably. The average number on the 1996-2016 Schoodic Christmas Bird Count was 13.6 while in the period 1974-1994, with less observer effort per count, the average was 20.8. The reason(s) for the decline is unknown.
