    Baird's Sandpiper / Calidris bairdii

    Migrant: . Five late Aug/early Sep records - Three from the early 1970s and two, Aug 28-29, 2018 and Aug 17-19, 2021 on Mount Desert Rock.

    Miscellany: Almost all Baird's Sandpiper migrate through the central part of North America.

    Baird's Sandpiper females make an astounding investment in egg production. Shortly after arriving in the Arctic, and with essentially no stored fat, she lays a clutch that is up to 120% of her body mass in just four days. How she manages this remains unstudied.
