    Barn Swallow / Hirundo rustica

    : Breeds. and widely distributed mid May-early Aug typically on/in human structures in open areas on the mainland and islands including (formerly) Mount Desert Rock. The fields around the Crooked Road/Norway Drive intersection and the MDI High School grounds are home to several pairs.

    : mid Apr-early June with a mid May peak and from early Apr, and again mid July-late Sep with an early Sep peak and to mid Oct and once, mid-Nov.

    Miscellany: Barn Swallow is another aerial insectivore whose populations plummeted in the 1990s and hasn't recovered. It Is perhaps unique among North America's bird migrants in that it occasionally breeds again on its wintering grounds in southern South America.
