Migration
:
Rare
Apr-May and Aug-Oct, with
outliers
to early Dec. Most records from protected salt/brackish water such as the
Mount Desert Narrows
and Bass Harbor Marsh but the species could turn up on any pond, marsh or flowage.
Miscellany: In the 1930s and 1940s, Black-crowns nested in several places around MDI including the Porcupine Islands and Little Duck Island but those colonies disappeared around 1950 and the species has remained rare since then. They could be overlooked given their dull plumage and dusk to dawn feeding schedule.
