Miscellany: Boreal Owls are mostly resident in the northern forests of Canada, just possibly extending south to northwestern Maine although nesting in the state is unconfirmed. The species does occasionally irrupt south, typically when their rodent food supply crashes, but it's a small, nocturnal owl and only a tiny, tiny percentage of those occurring would be detected. But occur they do; two were caught at a Saw-whet Owl banding station in the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge near Petit Manan Point in early Nov 2019.
