    Clay-colored Sparrow / Spizella pallida

: mid-late May and late Sep-mid Oct with to early Dec in weedy fields, gardens and places where migrants concentrate.

Miscellany: Clay-colored Sparrow are a northern Great Plains species which has spread east in the 20th century. In recent years there have been several breeding attempts in southern Maine. We expect they're annual here in fall but finding them takes careful examination of the numerous Chipping Sparrow flocks with which they often associate.
