: Breeds. to Apr-Jul on freshwater lakes and larger streams. Females with broods have been noted recently Jun/Jul on Jordan Pond, Bubble Pond and Eagle Lake.
: late Mar/early Apr to late Apr and again late Oct-late Nov on lakes, ponds and the upper part of inlets and coves with a strong inflow of fresh water. on salt water
: from Dec as long as fresh water remains open, otherwise absent. It's not clear if wintering birds are or from away. Not recorded from saltwater.
Miscellany: Local nesting status complicated due to confusion with female Red-breasted Merganser, the latter perhaps a rare breeder. On more than one occasion, the same female/brood has been reported as both species.
