: Breeds. to mid Apr-early Sep especially in coniferous and mixed forests, on mountain tops and ledges and in sphagnum bogs.
: to and beginning mid Mar and from mid Sep to mid Nov, in flocks in open woodlands and brushy areas with seed-bearing grasses.
: late Nov-early Mar but numbers vary. Typically at or near bird feeders. Most overwintering birds are adult males.
Miscellany: Dark-eyed Juncos have a host of local names including ‘snow bird', ‘snow flake', and our favorite, ‘twitterkins' after their cheerful flock calls. Juncos have four different subspecies groups, three of which are located in western North America. Individuals from one of these, the 'Oregon' group, have been reported here but without convincing details.
