: in deciduous and mixed woods, including in towns and villages, with trees large enough to support a nesting cavity. Often visits bird feeders stocked with suet or peanut butter.
Miscellany: Downy Woodpecker nests are quite easy to find as the larger nestlings beg noisily from their well-protected nest hole. They readily join mixed flocks of migrants Sep-Nov and frequent bird feeders throughout the winter. Some dispersal occurs as evidenced by early Aug/early Sep records from Mount Desert Rock (see here) but where these birds came from is unknown and regular migration has not been confirmed.
