    Glossy Ibis / Plegadis falcinellus

: early Apr-early May and mid May-early Sep. Unrecorded at other times. Bass Harbor Marsh is the only site with multiple records.

Miscellany: Glossy Ibis has increased dramatically since the early 1950s when it was unknown as a breeder north of the Carolinas. By the early 1970s a few were breeding in southern Maine. Virtually all the more northerly breeding Glossy Ibis are migratory and the birds we see in early spring have presumably overshot their breeding sites or, in the very few fall occurrences, dispersed from same post-breeding. Few are detected in our area, in part because we have little of the salt marsh habitat they prefer.
