    Great Egret / Ardea alba

: mid Apr-late May and again early Aug-mid Sept, with from early Apr and to mid Oct. No records late Oct-late Mar. More numerous in some years than others. Usually single birds but as many as seven together. Bass Harbor Marsh, Northeast Creek and the Thompson's Island salt marsh have been the most frequent host localities.

Miscellany: Great Egrets now nest in southern Maine, continuing a slow multi-decade expansion into New England. It's worth remembering that about 100 years ago, more than 95% of Great Egrets were killed by plume hunters. New regulations and perhaps a change in fashion helped stabilize the population and a century of increases followed.
