    Great Gray Owl / Strix nebula

    : Eight records, six of them in 1979, with the others Jan 19, 1977 in Bass Harbor and April 11-May 2, 2017 near Sand Beach

    Miscellany: Great Gray Owls are normally resident in their northern boreal forest breeding range but occasionally move south in numbers, presumably due to the population collapse of their rodent prey. The last big influx in New England was winter 1798-79 when almost 70 were recorded in Maine and hundreds of birdwatchers came to see them. Few birds are as magical as Great Grays; when the next one shows up, don't hesitate...
