    Horned Grebe / Podiceps auritus

    : Non-breeding. mid-Jun-early Jul becoming early Aug-early Sep, with most records from the

    : to mid Oct-late Apr with a peak late Oct-early Nov and again mid Apr, with from mid Sep and to early June, on all open salt water but with a preference for sheltered coves. Usually solitary but can cluster in areas of plentiful food. There are no records from fresh water.

    Miscellany: Grebes fly primarily night, perhaps because they are neither fast flying nor agile and presumably easy prey for Peregrine Falcons and the like.
