from mid Sep and to early June, on all open salt water but with a preference for sheltered locations such as Hadley Point and the Seal Cove Picnic Area. Usually solitary but can cluster in areas of plentiful food. There are no records from fresh water.
Miscellany: Grebes fly primarily night, perhaps because they are neither fast flying nor agile and presumably easy prey for Peregrine Falcons and the like.
