    Killdeer / Charadrius vociferus

    : Breeds. and late Apr-late Jun in areas with extensive bare grounds and some water. The Mount Desert High School grounds have supported pairs as have local golf courses and the KOA campground at the head of MDI.

    : mid Mar-early May with from late Feb and again mid Aug-mid Oct with from late Jul and to mid Dec. Migrants' habitats are more varied and can include mud flats, beaches and pond edges. late Dec-mid Feb but no records since the early 2000s. Mid Feb records could represent overwintering birds but are more likely very early spring migrants.

    Miscellany: Killdeer are famously noisy giving rise to local names like ‘Chattering Plover' and their loud ‘kill-deah' calls are often heard at night, especially by nesting pairs in late spring and early summer.
