A remarkable Jun 5, 2026 adult male on Ship Island was recorded by an automatic camera and identified when the images were reviewed some time later. It appears to be the only "spring" record for Maine.
Miscellany: Northern Wheatear breeds primarily in northern Eurasia extending east into Alaska/western Canada from Siberia, and west into northern/eastern Canada from Iceland and Greenland. These North American breeders retrace their steps back through Asia and Europe respectively to their wintering grounds in sub-Saharan Africa. Each year, a few presumably misoriented birds pass south through North America.
