    Pileated Woodpecker / Dryocopus pileatus

: particularly in mature deciduous and mixed woodland with large diameter trees capable of supporting their nest and roost holes. Scarce or absent from the larger forested islands but present on Bartlett's Island.

Miscellany: Pileateds play a significant role in forest ecosystems by excavating holes subsequently used for nesting and roosting by a number of birds and mammals incapable of fashioning their own nest/roost holes. Wood Duck are especially helped in this respect.
