    Red-breasted Nuthatch / Sitta canadensis

: to in mixed and coniferous woods, depending on the cone crop. A frequent visitor to bird feeding stations.

Miscellany: Every few years, a flood of Red-breasted Nuthatches pass through early Aug-mid Oct as they leave areas to the north apparently due to a lack of winter food on their breeding grounds. At such times, they seem to be everywhere, even offshore where in the massive flight of 1981 more than 40 were banded on Mount Desert Rock between Aug 1 and Oct 1, when the banding ceased. An exceptionally late individual, 22 Jun 2024 on Mount Desert Rock, was thought to be returning from the previous fall's exodus rather than a harbinger of things to come.
