    Ruby-throated Hummingbird / Archilocus colubris

    : Breeds. from mid May, most easily seen in gardens and around hummingbird feeders but present in open woodlands as well.

    : early-late May with a mid May peak and from mid Apr, and again mid Aug-mid Sep with a late Aug-early Sep peak and from late Jul and to mid Oct. Fall migrants are especially visible at Schoodic Point and along the . Impressive numbers gather late Aug-early Sep at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden (public access by reservation) in Seal Harbor.

    Miscellany: In spite of their tiny size, 3-3.5 grams, many Ruby-throats fly non-stop across the Gulf of Mexico, a one way distance of about 500 miles. Although famous for their nectar sipping, Ruby-throats feed their young mostly tiny insects captured in flight as nectar doesn't build bones and tissue.
