    Rufous Hummingbird / Selasphorus rufus

Wanderer: Oct 10, 1995 in Bar Harbor. There was an unidentified Selasphorus hummingbird Sep 8, 1975 in Seal Harbor.

Miscellany: There are now almost annual records of Selasphorus hummingbirds in Maine. Almost all of those definitively identified have been Rufous but the very similar Allen's Hummingbird (S. sasin) of far western North America has been recorded in the Northeast. The bird noted above flew into a College of the Atlantic greenhouse where it was caught, photographed and released unidentified other than as a Selasphorus spp. Experts determined later from those images that it was a Rufous.
