Miscellany: Song Sparrow is one of the most variable and widespread songbirds. The biggest ones in western Alaska weigh twice as much as the smallest ones in south coastal California; some are very dark, others pale and yet others quite rufous. But regardless, anyone who knows male Song Sparrow's song in Maine would recognize the singers in all other parts of its range.
