    Song Sparrow / Melospiza melodia

: Breeds. late Apr-early Aug in back yards, field edges and open areas.

: , occasionally , and widespread from mid Mar with a peak late Mar-early Apr and from early Mar, and again late Sept-early Nov with a peak mid-late Oct and to late Nov, in open areas with brushy patches.

: to early Dec-late Feb particularly at bird feeders but also in thickets along south and east facing salt water shorelines.

Miscellany: Song Sparrow is one of the most variable and widespread songbirds. The biggest ones in western Alaska weigh twice as much as the smallest ones in south coastal California; some are very dark, others pale and yet others quite rufous. But regardless, anyone who knows well male Song Sparrow's song in Maine would recognize the singers in all other parts of its range.
