South Polar Skua / Stercorarius maccormicki

: Non-breeding. and late Jun-late Sep depending on the marine food supply. No earlier/later records due in part to lack of observers. There are no records from land other than Mount Desert Rock. The Bar Harbor whale watch cruises with an itinerary are the source of most records.

Miscellany: South Polar Skuas breed on the Antarctica Continent and wander north during the Austral winter, reaching Greenland. Most of the skuas seen in our area Jun-Aug have been determined to be this species and not the North Atlantic breeding Great Skua.
