    Tundra Swan / Cygnus columbianus

Wanderer: May 6 to early Jun, 1986 in a field near Bar Harbor.

Miscellany: It may be a while before we see another Tundra Swan. Their normal migration route is well to the west of us, to and from Arctic breeding grounds via the Great Lakes to winter in the big bays from Maryland to North Carolina.

Trumpeter Swan, a similar looking and close relative of Tundra Swan, may have bred as far east as the Maritimes but they were harvested to extinction by the end of the 18th century. In recent years, Trumpeters have been reintroduced successfully to some of their ancestral eastern range as well as to locations in Ontario and New York. Wanderers, presumably from these introductions, have occurred in New England and at least once in 2010 in Maine. The next swan here might be a Trumpeter.
