In 1989, the then "Western Flycatcher" was spit into two species, Pacific-slope Flycatcher (E. occidentalis) and Cordilleran Flycatcher (E. difficilis). These were combined, again, under the name "Western Flycatcher" in 2023 by the relevant committees of the American Ornithologists Union and the International Ornithological Congress due to research showing that there was nothing that unambiguously separated the two former species across much of their western North American range.
