    Wilson's Phalarope / Phalaropus tricolor

Wanderer: June 25, 2012 on Ship Island in lower Blue Hill Bay.

Miscellany: Prior to the 1960s, Maine had only a few records of this stunning shorebird but they're annual now and have even nested. In the phalarope, the larger, more colorful females compete for males with the latter assuming all nest building, egg incubation and chick rearing duties...while the females pursue other males and then depart early on their southward migration.
