    Wilson's Snipe / Gallinago delicate

: No confirmed breeding records. Early May-early Jun records of "winnowing" birds from Great Meadow and Northeast Creek are likely late migrants.

: early Apr-mid May but hard to detect in wet meadows, marsh and pond edges, with from early Mar, and again mid Sep-mid Nov with from late Aug and to early Dec. The MDI High School Ponds are perhaps the most accessible spot to look for snipe.

: mid Dec-late Jan in mild winters in marshes and ponds with open water.

Miscellany: Early in the breeding season, male Wilson's Snipe have a thrilling aerial display as they fly around overhead at top speed, interrupted by shallow dives towards the ground at the bottom of which they fan their tails generating a loud vibrating sound known as "winnowing."
