    Townsend's Solitaire / Myadestes townsendi

Wanderer: late Oct-late Mar. With the exception of one mid Dec 1990, all four records occurred since 2003, the latest being Nov 5, 2015. All were single birds.

Miscellany: The nearest breeding range of Townsend's Solitaires is in northwestern South Dakota but the birds we see probably come some 2500 miles from the highly migratory populations breeding in extreme western Canada and Alaska, a pattern much like Varied Thrush. Unlike the thrush, solitaires don't visit feeders and it's likely we see as many as we do because of their habit of perching often on the very tops of trees. When here, solitaires feed on fruit, and sometimes associate with American Robins.
